Hey Photo Fam,

Here are some tips for styling your photo session.

  1. It doesn't have to match, it has to go! You don't need to to all wear the exact same thing. Try have one different items on each person be a different color.

  2. Black and dark color combinations work perfect for more formal, indoor photography sessions. Keep this in mind when planning your family’s outfits.

  3. Do your best to avoid patterned colors in clothing, as this looks distracting and at times, overly casual. Limit large logos.

  4. When dressing children, make sure they’re not overly uncomfortable in their chosen outfit. If they’re unhappy, it’ll show through in the family picture.

Black and White Photo Session

  1. Look for clothing that has texture, rather than patterns. A nicely textured solid looks much better than a busy pattern or print. Subtle patterns or prints are ok, but avoid designs like wide stripes, plaids or repetitive patterns.

  2. Color is important, but in a different way than you might think. When an image is rendered in black and white, the colors of the scene become varying shades of grey, from solid white to solid black. Blue will appear much darker grey than yellow, which will appear very light grey. It is the contrast of colors that makes a black and white photo interesting. Avoid wearing solid black or white.

  3. Contrast is very important. If your background is dark, you do not want to photograph someone wearing clothing that will appear dark and have him or her blend into the background. Same concept goes for a light background and light clothing.
